The Motorola 4800X launched in 1989 and was designed for use on the Racal-Vodafone and Cellnet ETACS analogue networks in the UK.
It had an LCD display and a standard 12 key numeric keypad was supplemented by the special keys of PWR, FCN, SND, and END.
Additionally, the 4800X had a RCL button which allowed users to recall and display telephone numbers that had been stored in memory. The phone also featured a MUTE button.
There was also an address book that could store up to 50 telephone numbers and associated names with speed dial access.
( A GRANDFATHER from Cardiff has been named the owner of the UK’s oldest mobile after keeping hold of his “brick phone” from the 80s.
Mark Vanstone, 59, still has the vintage Motorola 4800X, which he first used for work as a service engineer when he was 25.
But Mark gets the last laugh, as Mobile Phones Direct found that the model is for sale online for its original value of £1,000.)
